Time-Resolved Fluorescence Quenching Measurements of the Aggregation Numbers of Normal Sodium Alkyl Sulfate Micelles Well above the Critical Micelle Concentrations

چکیده
The aggregation numbers, NA, of normal sodium alkyl sulfate micelles were measured by time-resolved fluorescence quenching in order to test two aspects of a recent proposal by Quina et al. (J. Phys. Chem. 1995, 99, 17028) that these micelles grow as a power law of the total counterion concentration, [Na]aq, in the aqueous phase according to NA ) κ2([Na]aq), where κ2 and γ are constants for a given detergent. Both the surfactant and any added salt contribute to [Na]aq; thus the power law predicts that different combinations of surfactant and salt concentrations leading to the same value of [Na]aq should yield the same value of NA. This was confirmed, and the values of κ2 were determined.

Surfactant- and Salt-Induced Growth of Normal Sodium Alkyl Sulfate Micelles Well above Their Critical Micelle Concentrations
Time-resolved fluorescence quenching measurements were performed on normal sodium alkyl sulfate micelles, well above their critical micelle concentrations, to determine the functional dependence of the aggregation number on the detergent and added common counterion concentrations. Six members of the sodium alkyl sulfate family with different alkyl chain lengths including octyl, nonyl, decyl, un...
متن کاملGrowth of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Micelles with Detergent Concentration
Sodium alkyl sulfate micelles are predicted to grow as a power law of the total counterion salt concentration, Yaq, in the aqueous phase as follows: NA = K~(Y~~)Y, where N A is the micelle aggregation number and ~2 and y are constants which are estimated from the critical micelle concentration and the apparent degree of counterion attachment. For sodium dodecyl sulfate, NA = 162(Y,q)1/4 is pred...

The surfactants cesium, tetramethylammonium, tetraethylammonium, tetrapropylammonium and tetrabutylammonium dodecyl sulfates (CsDS, TMADS, TEADS, TPADS, and TBADS) have been synthesized by ion-exchange. The critical micellization concentration in the absence of added salt (cmc) has been determined at 10, 25, and 40 °C using the electrical conductivity method. The cmc was found to decrease in th...

Critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of cationic surfactant (alkyltrimethylammonium bromides, CnTABr, where n = 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18), and a bile salt sodium cholate (NaC) were determined from surface tension, conductance and dye solubilization methods, while of their equimolar mixtures from surface tension and dye solubilization methods. The interaction parameter (beta) obtained from analys...
متن کاملAggregation number-based degrees of counterion dissociation in sodium n-alkyl sulfate micelles.
Values of the degree of counterion dissociation, alpha, for sodium n-alkyl sulfate micelles, denoted by SN(c)S, where N(c) is the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, are defined by asserting that the aggregation number, N, is dependent only on the concentration, C(aq), of counterions in the aqueous pseudophase. By using different combinations of surfactant and added salt concentrations t...
